Storage Sheds Building Tips

Many people want to have an outdoor shed for the most obvious reason – storage. But the mere thought of constructing one may be overwhelming. Here are a few tips to use when building an outdoor shed that may help you along in your process.

PLAN. You have a few choices when deciding to build your shed. You can buy a kit, which is by far the easiest route, or you can select a plan. This involves a bit more work on your part but this way you get the outdoor shed you want. You can find plans at home improvement stores, on line or even at the library

PERMIT. Some Cities/counties do not require a permit for sheds under a certain size. The wise thing to do is to make some inquires and find out. Simply call your local permit office and tell them the size of the shed you intend to build. If you belong to a homeowners association, it is also smart to check with them.

TOOLS. Make a list of all the tools you will need when constructing your outdoor shed and be sure to have them handy when you begin your project. Tools can include work gloves, measuring tape, a circular saw, hammer, and a level.

MATERIALS. Most outdoor storage shed plans include a materials list. Follow the plans list and make sure you have everything before you start building. When purchasing a garden barn kit, all the materials should be included. It is best to double check your materials list before building your storage barn, otherwise you could be making multiple trips to your local building supply store for more materials.

LOCATION. Where you build your shed will depend on how big you want it to be. Make sure your shed is in direct sunlight so mold and mildew does not become an issue. Also be aware of all power and water lines. And make sure your shed is not in an area that is known to collect water.

FRAMING. Frame each wall independently and make sure to allow for opening for doors and windows. Lift the wall into place and secure it to the floor using either nails or screws. Once all walls are in place, be sure and attach them to each other at the corners. When selecting your door, keep in mind what you will be storing in the shed. You need to determine if a hinged or sliding door will best serve your needs.

PAINT OR SIDING. Once your shed is assembled you need to decide if you want to paint the exterior or put up siding. If you decide to paint make sure you prime the exterior wood first. Also be sure and putty all nail holes.

LANDSCAPE. Clean up the area around your new outdoor shed and consider doing some landscaping. Planting a few bushes and flowers will add to the over all appearance of your shed. Plus adding value to your property.
